Unlike most bands, however, the trio remained active, touring the East Coast, with mastermind Randy Jackson fostering some low-key side projects (China Rain, Sign). Here and now, the one-two triumph of openers “Arabian Nights” and “Light of My Love” shows the boys haven’t missed a trick since the halcyon daze of ’80s AOR. As in Zebra’s signature single, “Who’s Behind the Door,” Jackson still ponders deep thoughts like “Why” (a veritable “Blackbird” rewrite) and “Who Am I” (a bizarre take on the Bible with animal rights sentiments similar to the earlier FM chestnut “Bears”). And only Jackson could create a cosmic, comic crack like “So I Dance.” Admittedly, the crass “Free” stands as one of his weaker moments, but Jackson soars everywhere else on Zebra IV: Freed from the sterile production marring the otherwise excellent 3.V, he pumps each tune with grandiosity while retaining his invaluable sense of melody. This vital component keeps Zebra dancing in the ruins of other post-pop/prog bands that search for vitality and marketability by sacrificing the simple hooks and passion that made them famous in the first place. Zebra is a proud dinosaur, and Zebra IV is an eminently listenable record of epic insignificance. Now here’s hoping Zebra V comes along a little faster. ~ Whitney Z. Gomes |

Zebra [LP] $14.98 Funk pioneer George Clinton may have coined the term “cosmic slop,” but Karl Blau has taken the idea and run with it across international borders. For his third K Records release, he twists ’60s psychedelia and explorative jazz into his always sloppy brand of freak-folk. On ZEBRA, his take on music with an African slant, he maintains his loose, slacker ways, while adding a flurry of musical ideas to his minimalist palate. All of these colors bleed together to make a mellow brown, full of varying elements: jazz (modal piano tinkering, bass grooves, and flutes), folk (harmonica and throaty singing), and indie (tinny guitar and dry drum beats that often lose sight of their tempos). ZEBRA stands as firm proof that Blau’s pushing himself to grow with each release. |

The Purple Heart - $12.99 The year is 1942: eight American airmen crash-land during the Doolittle bombing raid on Tokyo and are taken prisoner. Though slated for execution, the pilots are put through a “show trial” by the military, on a charge of committing war crimes. The Japanese judges promise to be merciful if only the Americans will reveal vital US military secrets. But captain Dana Andrews speaks for the rest of his melting-pot crew-some of whom have been subjected to the most horrific of tortures–when he chooses death before dishonor. In its own way, The Purple Heart is as racist a piece of propaganda as was ever produced by Hollywood. The Japanese are shown to be little more than sadistic beasts (at one point, the judges interrupt the trial by moronically shouting “Banzai” after receiving news of a military victory), while hissing, buck-toothed interrogator Richard Loo (“I attended your…Amelican universities”), unable to admit that he’s been wrong about Yankee resilience, commits hara-kiri. Remember, however, that The Purple Heart was made at a time when America was still at war with Japan, and political correctness was hardly a consideration.
